BRITISH COLUMBIA DRIVERS LICENSE CLASSES

Licence classes and combinations

We have different types of licences for different needs. The most common licence is the Class 5-passenger vehicle licence.

Car class 5 or 7

Class 5 or 7 driver's licence

What you can use it for

  • To drive cars, vans and trucks (2 axles maximum)

  • To drive motorhomes (may exceed 2 axles)

  • To drive construction and utility vehicles

  • To tow trailers or vehicles up to 4,600kg

  • To ride a limited speed motorcycle or an all-terrain vehicle (ATV)

  • To ride 3-wheeled vehicles, not including 3-wheeled motorcycles (trikes) or motorcycle/sidecar combinations

Note: Class 7 has graduated licensing restrictions

Motorcycle class 6 or 8

Class 6 or 8 driver's licence

What you can use it for

  • To ride motorcycles, all-terrain cycles and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs)

Note: Class 8 has Graduated Licensing restrictions

What you can use it for

  • Semi-trailer trucks

  • All other Class 1-5 motor vehicles or combination of vehicles

Commercial class 2

Class 2

What you can use it for

  • To drive buses, including school buses, special activity buses and special vehicles

  • To drive any vehicle allowed in Class 4 and 5

Commercial class 3

Class 3

What you can use it for

  • To drive trucks with more than two axles, such as dump trucks and large tow trucks but does not allow driving a bus carrying passengers

  • To drive trailers or towed vehicles exceeding 4,600 kg provided the truck and trailers do not have air brakes

  • To drive a tow car towing a vehicle of any weight

  • To drive a mobile truck crane

  • To drive any vehicle in Class 5

Commercial class 4 (restricted)

What you can use it for

  • To drive taxis and limousines (up to 10 persons including the driver)

  • To drive for a ride-hailing service such as Uber or Lyft

  • To drive ambulances

  • To drive special vehicles with a seating capacity of not more than 10 persons (including the driver) used to transport people with disabilities

  • To drive any vehicle in Class 5

Commercial (Class 4 - unrestricted)

What you can use it for

  • To drive buses with a maximum seating capacity of 25 persons (including the driver), including school buses, special activity buses and special vehicles used to transport people with disabilities

  • To drive taxis and limousines

  • To drive for a ride-hailing service such as Uber or Lyft

  • To drive ambulances

  • To drive any vehicle in Class 5

Heavy trailer (class 4 or 5)

(Code 20) added to Class 4 or 5

What you can use it for

  • To tow trailers or towed vehicles exceeding 4,600 kg gross vehicle weight (GVW). Neither the vehicle nor trailer may have air brakes.

Note: With this endorsement, you'll need to obtain a commercial class medical assessment

House trailer (Class 4 or 5)

(Code 7) added to Class 4 or 5

What you can use it for

  • To tow a recreational (house) trailer exceeding 4,600 kg gross vehicle weight (GVW). Neither the truck nor trailer may have air brakes

Get a house trailer endorsement for towing heavy recreational vehicles (RVs)

Moped scooter (no class)

No special class of licence

  • May be operated with all classes of driver's licence.

  • Cannot be operated on a class 5 or 7 learner's licence

A limited-speed motorcycle has:

  • A motor equipped with a piston displacement of not more than 50 cc, or a power source that produces a maximum of 1.5 kW

  • A power drive system that does not require clutching or shifting after the drive system is engaged

  • A maximum speed of 70 km/h on level ground

  • A maximum weight of 95 kg

  • Wheels with a diameter of 254 mm or more
